Don't Jeopardize Your Career As A Security Guard By Making These Mistakes Away From Work

Zack Graham

When you're employed as a security guard, it's not only the manner in which you perform on the job that can impact your career. You must also hold yourself to a high standard when you're not on duty, as the mistakes you might make away from work could potentially impact your employment. When you're hired in this capacity, your supervisor will typically go over the rules and regulations for when you're on the job and when you're not. Here are some mistakes that you don't want to make when you're away from work.

Using Illegal Drugs

Many security companies give their employees random drug tests, as it's vitally important for each security officer to fulfill his or her duties with a sound mind. While you might not see the harm in occasionally using illegal drugs over the weekend or when you're on vacation, your employer won't share the same view — and if you fail a random drug test upon returning to work, it's possible that you'll be suspended or even have your job terminated. You don't want to throw a promising career away over a night of partying, so make sure to always stay away from illegal drugs.

Driving Under The Influence

Just as drugs can impact your career as a security officer, so too can an arrest for driving under the influence. Even if you're allowed to consume alcohol when you're not on duty, drinking and driving is a completely different situation. A DUI arrest can be bad news for your career as a security officer because you may have your driver's license temporarily taken away. Even if your employer doesn't immediately know about the arrest, you'll be in for a difficult position when you're no longer able to drive your security patrol vehicle around the area that you cover due to not having your license.

Getting In Trouble With The Law

You want to keep a clean criminal record, and that goes beyond drinking and driving. Getting in trouble with the law in any way can jeopardize your career as a security guard. When you're hired, it's customary for your employer to run a criminal background check on you. However, these checks may also occur randomly in the months and years ahead. If you find yourself in trouble with the law for any reason, you could be facing trouble at work, too. Doing your best to stay on the right side of the law will prevent such hassles.

Keep these tips in mind when looking for security jobs in your area.
